Japan Tourist Visa for UAE Residents: Requirements, eVisa and Application Guide

Last updated: 2 November 2026

Planning a holiday in Japan from the UAE? Your visa requirements depend on your nationality, passport type and travel purpose. Holding a UAE residence visa does not automatically qualify you for visa-free entry.

For residents who need a visa, Japan’s electronic visa system is available for eligible tourism visits. However, an eVisa does not mean UAE applicants can complete the entire application independently online. Applications follow the local arrangements operated through VFS Global.

This guide explains the application route, documents, processing times, fees and electronic visa display requirements.

Do UAE Residents Need a Visa to Visit Japan?

Some UAE residents need a visa before travelling to Japan, while others qualify for a short-stay exemption based on their passport.

UAE nationals holding ICAO-compliant electronic passports qualify for visa-free short visits of up to 90 days, subject to the applicable entry conditions. This exemption applies to qualifying UAE passport holders, rather than everyone who holds UAE residency.

Other residents should check their nationality and passport against the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ visa-exemption list.

Before applying, confirm:

  • The passport you will use.
  • Whether a visa exemption applies.
  • Your actual travel purpose.
  • Your intended length of stay.
  • Whether special rules apply to your travel document.

Can UAE Residents Apply for a Japan eVisa?

Eligible foreign residents of the UAE who require a visa can use the Japan eVisa arrangements for single-entry, short-term tourism visits.

The route covers stays of up to 90 days. This maximum does not mean every successful applicant receives permission to stay for 90 days. Follow the conditions and duration granted for your visit.

Tourism eVisas are not the appropriate category for visiting relatives or friends, business activities or employment. Multiple-entry applications also follow separate requirements.

The electronic system is available to ordinary-passport holders. Applicants travelling on other documents should obtain instructions for their circumstances.

See the official Japan eVisa guidance before selecting your application category.

Is the Application Fully Online?

UAE applicants must follow the local submission process.

The Embassy of Japan confirms that ordinary-passport visa and eVisa applications are received through VFS Global by appointment. These arrangements have applied since 1 August 2024.

Start with the Embassy’s visa information and the official VFS Japan UAE website.

An eVisa is issued electronically instead of being placed in your passport as a visa sticker. Electronic issuance and document submission are separate parts of the process.

Should You Apply in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Check the correct jurisdiction before booking.

VFS identifies Dubai and the Northern Emirates under the Dubai application arrangements. Applicants with residence visas issued in Abu Dhabi must submit their applications at the Abu Dhabi centre.

The Abu Dhabi arrangements also cover people living in Abu Dhabi emirate with residence visas issued elsewhere. These applicants must provide evidence of living in Abu Dhabi, including:

  • Bank or credit-card statements showing daily expenditure for the last three months.
  • A tenancy contract.
  • A TAQA bill.

If your actual address and the emirate that issued your residence visa differ, confirm your application location before arranging an appointment.

Use the VFS jurisdiction guidance.

What Documents Are Required?

Your checklist depends on the application centre, visa category, nationality and personal circumstances. A general preparation list includes:

  • Passport and required copies.
  • Completed and signed application form.
  • Recent photograph or photographs, as required.
  • Emirates ID and applicable residence documents.
  • Employment, business or sponsorship evidence.
  • Financial statements.
  • Flight and accommodation bookings.
  • A daily itinerary for Japan.

This overview should be used alongside the relevant official checklist.

Abu Dhabi Tourism eVisa Documents

The Abu Dhabi checklist specifies different supporting documents for different applicants.

Employees generally need a salary certificate stating their joining date, salary and position, plus the latest three-month bank statement showing the last three salary payments.

Applicants supported by a family member, such as students and homemakers, need the supporting person’s financial and identity documents, a travel-expense sponsorship letter and proof of relationship.

Investors and business owners need a business letter stating average monthly income, a trade licence copy and personal bank statements for the latest three months.

The checklist also requires round-trip flight bookings, accommodation bookings and an itinerary covering the trip.

Check the Abu Dhabi tourism eVisa checklist.

Dubai Tourism eVisa Documents

Dubai’s published checklist includes specific preparation requirements:

  • Documents must be in English or Japanese.
  • The application form must be typed and originally signed.
  • Photographs must meet the specified requirements, including a white background and a size of 45 Ă— 35 mm.
  • Photographs must have been taken within the previous six months.
  • The applicant’s UAE electronic bank statement must cover three months and be issued no more than ten days before the application.

Additional requirements apply to dependants, business owners, certain nationalities and other circumstances.

Check the Dubai tourism eVisa checklist.

How Long Must Your Passport and UAE Residence Remain Valid?

Follow the checklist for your application location.

Dubai’s published tourism eVisa checklist specifies validity of 30 days after returning from Japan for the passport, UAE residence visa and Emirates ID.

The Abu Dhabi checklist states that the entire trip must fall within the remaining validity of the applicant’s passport and UAE residence visa.

Review these requirements before booking your appointment:

How Do You Submit the Application?

Once you have confirmed your category and jurisdiction:

  1. Download the relevant checklist and application form.
  2. Prepare the required documents.
  3. Check that names, dates and travel details agree across the application.
  4. Book an appointment through the official VFS website.
  5. Submit the application according to the centre’s instructions.
  6. Respond to any requests for additional information.
  7. Review your visa details after issuance.

VFS’s Abu Dhabi instructions allow submission in person or through an authorised representative. Applicants must present their original passports; eVisa applicants retain their passports after submission.

Read the Abu Dhabi application instructions or the instructions for your own centre.

How Long Does Processing Take?

VFS currently publishes a minimum processing period of 8–10 working days. Some applications may take three to four weeks.

Applications must be lodged within the 90 days before the intended entry into Japan. Appointment availability and document preparation require additional planning time.

See the published VFS processing information.

Dubai’s tourism eVisa checklist also states that applications cannot be accepted when the flight is scheduled within two weeks of the application date. Check the Dubai checklist.

These timeframes do not guarantee a decision date. Additional documents, interviews or further checks can extend processing. See the Ministry’s visa FAQs.

How Much Does a Japan Visa Cost?

Visa fees depend on nationality, visa category and any applicable exemption. Japan revised its visa fees with effect from 1 July 2026.

The Japanese Consulate-General in Dubai publishes the following fees for applications from that date:

Visa categoryPublished visa fee
Single entry — general rateAED 365
Multiple entry — general rateAED 730
Indian nationals — single or multiple entryAED 20

Nationality-based exemptions may apply. Refer to the Consulate’s official fee schedule.

VFS service charges are separate. Its Dubai page currently lists a service charge of AED 110, including VAT. Optional services may cost extra. VFS fee information.

Some provider pages may still show earlier visa fees. Use the latest official consular schedule and confirm the applicable charges before paying.

The Ministry’s fee guidance explains the revised fees and distinguishes visa fees from agency handling charges.

How Long Is a Japan eVisa Valid?

Distinguish the visa’s validity for entry from the permitted length of your stay.

VFS states that a Japan eVisa is valid for a single entry within three months of issuance. Your authorised stay is a separate condition.

Check the expiry date and conditions shown on your issued visa and follow the period of stay granted on arrival. See the VFS eVisa information.

How Do You Display Your eVisa at the Airport?

Travellers with a Japan eVisa must display their live “Visa issuance notice” using an internet-connected device.

A screenshot, saved PDF or printed copy is not accepted as a substitute for the live display. See the official eVisa requirements.

For visas issued through the UAE arrangements, the Ministry directs travellers to Method 2 in its display guide:

  1. Scan the QR code on the visa issuance notice.
  2. Enter the required information.
  3. Open the live notice.
  4. Check that the countdown timer is running.

Practise the process before travelling and ensure your device has power and internet access.

Follow the official visa issuance notice display instructions.

Does a Visa Guarantee Entry into Japan?

A valid visa does not guarantee entry. Travellers must undergo immigration examination on arrival and satisfy the applicable landing requirements.

You should be able to explain your travel purpose and comply with the conditions of your visit. See the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ visa FAQs.
