Canada Parents and Grandparents Program 2025

Family Reunification Opportunity Through PGP

The Canadian government has officially announced that starting July 28, 2025, it will begin issuing invitations to apply under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). This initiative provides Canadian citizens and permanent residents with an opportunity to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residency in Canada.

Invitations to Be Issued from July 28

According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), a total of 17,860 invitations will be sent over a two-week period, with a goal to accept 10,000 complete applications for the 2025 intake cycle.

Important: All invitations will be issued only to those who submitted an Interest to Sponsor form in 2020. The form has not reopened since then.

Who Can Sponsor Under the PGP

To be eligible to sponsor under the Parents and Grandparents Program, you must be:

  • A Canadian citizen
  • A permanent resident
  • A registered Indian under the Canadian Indian Act

Only individuals who receive an official invitation from IRCC will be allowed to submit an application. Due to the high number of interested applicants, IRCC will continue using a lottery-based selection system from the 2020 submissions.

New Applications Not Accepted for Now

At this time, the Interest to Sponsor form remains closed, and only those who submitted in 2020 are eligible for the current draw. Families hoping to apply in the future are advised to follow official IRCC updates for any announcements on program changes or future intakes.

Alternative Option: The Super Visa

For applicants who are not selected in the PGP draw, the Super Visa offers a strong alternative. This visa allows parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to 10 years, with multiple entries and extended stays of up to 5 years per visit.

Super Visa Requirements

  • Proof of private medical insurance from a Canadian provider
  • Applicants must be admissible to Canada
  • The Canadian host must meet the minimum income threshold and provide a written commitment of financial support

Final Thoughts

The reopening of the Parents and Grandparents Program reflects Canada’s strong commitment to family reunification. While opportunities are currently limited to 2020 applicants, the Super Visa continues to offer a practical and welcoming solution for families who wish to stay connected across borders.

Stay informed by monitoring IRCC announcements for future opportunities.
