Canada has unveiled a new LMIA-exempt work permit as part of its Tech Talent Strategy, aimed at attracting skilled foreign workers. This permit is available under the Innovation Stream of the International Mobility Program (IMP). It is designed for individuals with job offers from eight selected tech companies known for their industry leadership and significant growth potential.
What is the LMIA-Exempt Work Permit?
The LMIA-exempt work permit is part of Canada’s strategy to streamline the hiring process for high-skilled foreign workers. Unlike traditional work permits that require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), this new permit eliminates the need for such an assessment. This initiative is a key component of the Innovation Stream within the IMP, which supports Canada’s goal of becoming a global tech leader.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the LMIA-exempt work permit, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Job Offer: Applicants must receive a job offer from one of the eight selected companies participating in the Global Hypergrowth Project (GHP).
- High-Skilled Occupation: The job offer must be in a high-skilled occupation categorized under the National Occupational Classification (NOC) Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities (TEER) categories 0, 1, 2, or 3.
- Education and Experience: Applicants must have the necessary education and experience specified in the NOC for the occupation.
This work permit is available to eligible individuals both inside and outside Canada. Those hired for occupations in TEER categories 0 or 1 may benefit from faster processing times.
The NOC System
The NOC system classifies Canadian occupations into categories based on the training, education, experience, and responsibilities required. The TEER rankings further group jobs, aiding in the identification of high-skilled roles.
Employer Requirements
- Submit an Offer: Provide an offer of employment.
- Pay Fee: Pay a $230 CAD employer compliance fee.
- Provide Number: Issue an offer of employment number to the potential employee.
